Hook Choral Society - Eternal Light

Date of Event: 13-11-2016

Local choir invited to sing in Carnegie Hall, New York

In March this year Hook Choral Society received a surprise invitation from an organisation called DCINY (Distinguished Concerts International New York) to sing in Carnegie Hall, New York City where composer Howard Goodall holds a residency this Autumn. They offered the opportunity to be part of a choir of around 200 voices for the American premiere of Goodall's work Eternal Light: A Requiem.

Hook Choral Society were one of the first (possibly the first) amateur choirs to perform Eternal Light in Britain and a number of choir members have also performed the piece in London, with Goodall himself conducting. It is a huge honour that this invitation was made by DCINY on Howard Goodall’s personal recommendation.

A group of 21 singers and 6 guests will make the trip from 17th to 21st November. The concert which will take place in the main Isaac Stern auditorium on Sunday 20th and will be followed by a Gala dinner.

On Sunday 13th November, 2016 (Remembrance Sunday) Hook Choral Society will perform Eternal Light as part of their Autumn Concert at St John’s Church in Hook. The programme will also include Lux aeterna by Morten Lauridsen, the third movement from Sonata for Harp by Paul Hindemith and My Soul there is a Country by Hubert Parry.

The choir will be accompanied by professional soloists and musicians.

Tea and cakes will be available during the interval with donations in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Hook Choral Society Concert

Date of Event: 16-04-2016

Hook Choral Society in concert with four outstanding soloists and accompanied by noted organist Christopher Brayne.

Great music on your doorstep

Haydn – Nelson Mass

The Nelson Mass is arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition, the prevailing mood being one of jubilation. Haydn once observed, ‘at the thought of God my heart leaps for joy, and I cannot help my music doing the same’.

Allegri – Miserere

According to the popular story (backed up by family letters), the fourteen-year-old Mozart was visiting the Sistine Chapel, when he heard this piece and wrote it down entirely from memory. Less than three months later Mozart had gained fame for the work despite the fact that it was forbidden to perform it anywhere but in the Vatican. He was summoned to Rome by Pope Clement XIV, but instead of excommunicating the boy, the Pope showered praises on him for his feat of musical genius.

Casals – Nigra Sum

The Nigra Sum text comes from Song of Solomon 1:5 and a few following verses and is given a beautiful lyrical setting by the Spanish cellist and conductor Pablo Casals.

Mascagni – O Rejoice for the Lord has Arisen

The famous Easter hymn is taken from Cavalleria Rusticana, Mascagni’s masterpiece.

Esˇenvalds – Salutaris Hostia, Stars and Only in Sleep

O Salutaris Hostia (‘O Saving Victim’ or ‘O Saving Sacrifice’), is a section of one of the Eucharistic hymns written by St Thomas Aquinas for the Feast of Corpus Christi and has been given a glorious setting by Esˇenvalds. His composition Stars features a most unusual and surprising musical accompaniment, the text being adapted from the poem ‘Stars’ by Sara Teasdale (1920). Lastly, Only in Sleep, also with words by Sara Teasdale, completes the trio of pieces from this exciting contemporary Latvian composer.

Hook Choral Society Autumn Concert

Date of Event: 15-11-2014

In 1729 Bach became the director of Leipzig’s Collegium Musicum, a group of student musicians who met each Friday evening in Zimmermann’s Coffee House to give concerts. It is for this group that he wrote the lighthearted Coffee Cantata which pokes fun at both coffee drinkers and their old-fashioned critics. To be sung by professional soloists.

The programme includes four works by Mozart:

Veni Sante Spiritus a sacred motet written in 1768 when Mozart was just 12 years old.

Exultate Jubilate is a three-movement motet to be sung by Jennifer France who has an extensive concert repertoire and has performed in many top London venues.

Hook Choral Society and the soloists will sing Mozart’s Mass in C. It is thought that this joyful work may have been written for his wife Constanze after her safe recovery from the birth of their first child. Constanze sang one of the soprano solos at the work’s premier in 1783 despite the fact that the work was, and remains, unfinished.

Finally the choir will sing the simple, beautiful Ave Verum Corpus composed in the final year of Mozart’s life.

Great music on your doorstep.

Hook Choral Society’s Spring Concert features Haydn’s Theresienmesse, one of the six last masses which, along with The Creation and The Seasons, are considered to be the choral masterpieces of his old age. Haydn’s music is described as a fusion of cheerfulness, exuberance, originality, classical elegance and intellectual power – all qualities that apply to the setting of this mass.

Also on the programme is Morten Lauridsen’s Lux aeterna a rich and intensely moving five-movement, non-liturgical requiem.

With professional soloists – great music on your doorstep.

Hook Choral Society Autumn Concert

Date of Event: 23-11-2013

The concert is called Director's Cut' because we are singing some of our musical director's favourite choral pieces.

These include works by Elgar, Parry, Stanford and Holst plus a piece called 'Take Him Earth For Cherishing' by Howells that was written to commemorate the assassination of President Kennedy on 22nd November 1963.

The programme also includes 'A Quiet Alleluia' by Kenton Coe a well-known American composer who also happens to be the uncle of Sharon Glen who is a choir member. The piece was written as a birthday gift for Sharon's Mother and the composer himself is travelling from America to be with us for the concert.

Sharon will also sing the famous solo 'The Angel's Farewell' from Elgar's Dream of Gerontius
